Visiting the Family people or a Trip back to the 18th century
Old Believers or "Semeiskie" is a bright and ancient branch of Russian people. In fact, nowadays they represent a piece of Old Russian culture - Old Muscovy of before-Peter the First times. Its is them who were named "raskolniki" or dissenters. They refused to follow Russian Orthodox church reform and were exiled to Siberia in XVIII century.
Local residents nick-named them "Semeiskie" or "Family people" due to strong family ties and closeness of their social life.
Half-day trip to the villages Tarbagatai, Big Kunaley or Desyatnikovo (your choice) will take you to the Russia's past with its long streets, brightly painted houses and babushkas who observe notefully everybody passing by.
Local museum established by the priest is located in a former school gym, and exhibits thousands of Old Russian everyday life articles - icons, bibles, household utensils, clothes and many more. You also have a unique opportunity to visit a private house, talk to babushkas and have a lunch/dinner of Old Russian cuisine* (trying home-made vodka-samogonka).
* Old Russian cuisine has a great selection of meat dishes, dairy products, bakery.
Menu: homemade bacon, home-grown vegetables, peasant-style cabbage soup with pork, fried pork with boiled potatoes, sweet rice porridge boiled with milk, fish cake, sweet bird-cherry tree and carrot buns (pirozhki), honey, berry juice "mors", bread drink "kvass", samogonka.
10am - Departure to Tarbagatay
10.40am - Stop at the foot of the mountain "Sleeping Lion", hiking
11.30am - Arrival to the village of Tarbagatai. Excursion to the museum.
12.00am - Excursion to the Old Believers' Church
12.40pm - Folklore program with rituals and games
1.10pm - Lunch
2.00pm - Departure to Ulan-Ude
3.00pm - Arrival to the city
